Boodle’s Private Members’ Club is one of the oldest in London, established in 1762 the club sits proudly on St James Street in the heart of modern Westminster.
The club can boost a proud history, its members such as; The Duke of Wellington, Adam Smith, Winston Churchill & Ian Fleming have helped shape British history & literature. Its current, exclusive membership still comprises parliamentarians and the gentry of the UK and Boodle’s still retains an elegant charm and excellent reputation.
During 2010 Boodle’s management decided to update their current monitoring systems to ensure that going forwards they had a system that would meet the modern HACCP requirements, give enhanced monitoring functions in a package that would be easy for their staff to manage.
The Brief
Boodle’s requirement was to monitor the temperature in all fridges & freezers in the restaurants kitchens, monitor the boiler plant to ensure the equipment was functioning and to monitor the boiler room for any possible flood risk. Due to the nature of the buildings listed status, its elegant interior and decor they also wanted the monitoring system to be wireless. The monitoring system also need to produce HACCP complaint reports and store recorded data for future review. The system would also need to be able to alarm both internally and externally to let the relevant staff know of any issues. The management of Boodle’s were not keen on having additional computer requirements or software licence costs and their desired system would need to operate without these.
The Requirement
The survey of the Boodle’s showed a requirement for 13 fridges & 6 freezers sensors to be installed to monitor temperature in the production and finishing kitchens. 3 boilers sensors and 1 flood detection system to be installed to monitor for boiler outages and to ensure failure was not caused by water ingress. The sensors would be spread over 5 floors of the listed Georgian building with the base station needing to be installed within the Executive Chef’s office.
Tektroniks Recommendation
Tektroniks recommended their Wireless DATAcentre Monitoring System to cover Boodle’s requirements. The DATAcentre was the chosen product due to its ability to receive input from upto 120 Tektroniks Wireless Sensors, that the wireless sensors could cover the range of sensors required and for the ability to be able to install the system without needing to disturbed the structure of the building.
The DATAcentre ability to also email daily HACCP compliant reports to chosen recipients and alarm to notify of issues were also taking into consideration. The other major benefit of the DATAcentre is its stand alone nature, with the DATAcentre there is no need for any additional software or computer hardware to be able to access data or review historical information. The DATAcentre could be connected to the Boodle’s internal network using a standard Ethernet connection and accessed by the relevant staff using any standard internet browser.
Tektroniks recommended the following base station & sensors;
M02LCMU101 – Wireless DATAcentre Base Station, M02WS101 - Wireless Sensor, Internal Temperature Probe for the fridge monitoring, M02WS104 – Wireless Sensor, External Temperature Probe for the freezer monitoring, M02WS111 – Wireless Sensor, Volt Free Digital Input for the boiler monitoring, MO2WSFLD – Wireless Flood Detection Sensor for water ingress monitoring, M02WS103 – Wireless Repeater, to give total building sensor coverage
Tektroniks also quoted for 2 days to completely install the system and to train the relevant Boodle’s staff using Tektroniks own qualified engineers.
The Outcome
Boodle’s decided that all round the Tektroniks DATAcentre offered them a value for money monitoring system that would meet all of their current requirements. The fact that the system could easily be extended by adding additional sensors should their needs change was also seen as a massive benefit. The system was therefore chosen and installed.
Feedback From Boodle’s
Boodle’s Executive Chef, Steven Carter – “We are extremely pleased with Tektroniks and the Wireless DATAcentre Monitoring System. Tektroniks continually kept us upto date during the whole process and delivered the system they quoted on budget and on time”.
“The DATAcentre system has been very easy to operate from a users point of view, we get all the data we need to make sure we are HACCP compliant and best of all we know if we have a issue before it becomes a massive problem. Recently we had an issue with a fridge which had not sealed properly, due to the systems warning we not only managed to save on a stock loss but to also rectify the problem before it caused more serious damage”.
“The DATAcentre has given real peace of mind and I would personally recommend anyone looking for a monitoring system to contact Tektroniks for their advice”.
